New book edited by David Rankine

By Psyche | August 27, 2009

In his blog on RitualMagick.co.uk, David Rankine, who with Stephen Skinner last year released Veritable Key of Solomon, announced that he has a new book coming out.

The Book of Treasure Spirits: A 17th Century Grimoire of Magical Conjurations to Increase Wealth and Catch Thieves Through the Invocation of Spirits, Fallen Angels, Demons and Fairies. will be published by Avalonia Books, and is set to be released September 7th, 2009.

In Rankine’s blog the book is described thusly:

Conjurations of Goetic spirits, old gods, demons and fairies are all part of a rich heritage of the magical search for treasure trove. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance the British Monarchy gave out licenses to people seeking treasure in an effort to control such practices, and this is one reason why so many grimoires are full of conjurations and charms to help the magician find treasure.

Considering the current economic climate, this might be a great time to invest in a book on treasure-finding spirits.

The book will be published in paperback, and retail for an economical £14.99

Abraxas, Issue 1Fulgur and Treadwell‘s are jointly launching a new occult journal, Abraxas, billed as “a new independent journal of historical and contemporary occultism”.

There will be two editions, a deluxe issue of 171 numbered copies which will include an original hand-printed wood engraving by Francesco Parisi, and a standard editions containing a letter-press printed Manifesto. (The standard edition cover is pictured on the left.)

As the journal will be printed by Fulgur I expect it will be gorgeous but, of course, they’re not cheap. The deluxe edition will sell for £70, and the standard for £25.

Mythical Creatures stamps from Royal Mail

By Psyche | July 1, 2009

Royal Mail, Mythical Creatures, Fairies, by Dave McKeanA new collection from the UK’s Royal Mail titled Mythical Creatures artwork by Dave McKean.

The First Day Cover, Presentation Pack and presentation pack include very short stories for each stamp by fan-favourite Neil Gaiman.

The stamps began circulating on June 16th, and I’ve already received two birthday cards from Angleterre bearing the Fairies stamp pictured left. Though I rather think the Mermaid is my favourite.

The stamps feature various mythical creatures, including unicorns, giants, fairies, pixies, dragons and mermaids.

You can see them all, and their values, on the Royal Mail website here.

New Austin Osman Spare catalogue at Weiser Antiquarian

By Psyche | May 23, 2009

Austin Osman Spare Portrait Weiser Antiquarian‘s fifty eighth catalogue titled “Austin Osman Spare. Books and Ephemera.” features works by and about Spare.

Here you’ll find first editions of Spare’s work, as well as (more affordable) reprints, biographies and rare catalogues from art exhibitions.

I just bought a copy of Evolution, Volume One, by Stephen Pochin and two catalogues, Borough Satyr and Austin Osman Spare: Artist – Occultist – Sensualist which I’m very excited about.

It’s also fascinating to see how much the prices have climbed for some of the works I already own. Geeze. If you’re interested in Spare, and can afford to, buy while still can.

And hey, as an added bonus, it looks like Weiser Anitquarian now hosts a variety of RSS feeds so you can be notified of any new books that come in under your favourite categories. Neat.
