Solstice occurs at different times around the world, though here in Toronto the summer solstice usually occurs on the 21st or 22nd of June.
Like an ancient recess bell, it sounds the kickoff to summer holidays.
I’ve written about our Feasts before, dinner parties my husband and I host for our friends on the solstices and equinoxes. The blog has been quiet the past few days as we were in preparation for Our Midsummer Feast held yesterday.
To start we had a cheese spread with double cream brie, havarti with dill, Boursin, cherry covered goat’s cheese, herbed goat cheese with a variety of crackers; pita with roast red pepper dip, spicy hummus, babaganouj and tzatziki; tortilla chips with guacamole, and cranberries.
For dinner we served steaks or portobello mushroom,; mashed potatoes, asparagus, feta-stuffed tomatoes, and a feta and blueberry spinach salad. For dessert, a choice of blueberry or cherry New York-style cheesecake, vanilla ice cream with Belgin chocolate shavings and fruit.
In many countries, the summer solstice is a time to celebrate life, whether through a religious ceremony that seeks help with crops, a ritual request for fertility or a June wedding, which is still a common occurrence today. For this and other summer traditions, you can thank your pagan roots.

We’re not Pagan, but we enjoy Feasting with friends, celebrating good company. How do you normally spend the solstice? Did you do anything special this year?

You’re not pagan?? I had no idea. What do you consider yourself, if not pagan, Psyche?

Psyche reply on June 27th, 2008:
No, to be brief, theistically I’m an atheist with philosophically agnostic tendencies.
I have many good friends who are Pagan, and I like the holidays. There’s something joyous yet sensible about celebrating the seasons - I simply don’t believe anthropomorphic gods are involved.
