Ryle MacPebbles\' Pagan FenceRyle MacPebbles of Des Moines sought permission to paint religious symbols on his fence, a request which was granted, but neighbourhood inspections administrator Ben Bishop complains that it looks more like graffiti.

The MacPebbleses said a city inspector approved the fence earlier this year. The symbols - a bull that represents food blessings; letters of ancient Germanic alphabet that mean good health, protection and larger perspective; a pentagram; and other Celtic paganism symbols - were on the fence when it was inspected.

- Des Moines Register, “Pagan symbols on fence must go, city insists

However, it seems the approval was granted by the wrong inspector, a permit and development inspector - not the neighbourhood inspections devision, which consequently issued a removal notice.

City law defines any “inscription, drawing, picture, letter, number, symbol or other written communication” on a surface not intended for such use as graffiti. It does not specifically address religious symbols. MacPebbles said he painted the symbols on the outside of the fence to protect the family’s home and to ward off evil energy.

MacPebbles feels he is being persecuted for his religion, using graffiti as an excuse to have the symbols removed.

It seems that if it’s his property, he should be able to do whatever the hell he wants to do with, so long as he’s not posting pornographic pictures or something like that. Perhaps if he paints the Symbols in a more “artistic”/”this is supposed to be here” sort of way, there would be less issue?

I’d suggest he just go out and get some plaques or actual Pentagrams, but I can only imagine how long it would be until they got stolen.

Psyche reply on June 16th, 2008:

As a homeowner myself, I’d be complaining anyone spray painted their fence in my neighbourhood, no matter what the symbols were.

That said, if he lives in an area where artful graffiti is chic (think Queen Street West in Toronto), then a case could be made if it were spruced up.

I can see where both sides are coming from on this, but ultimately I think it ought to depend on what’s in keeping with the character of the neighbourhood.
