Plutonica.net Erisian Haiku Contest: Win a free book!

By Psyche | May 7, 2008

Stumble it!

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Erisian Haiku ContestLast year for Agnostica Plutonica.net ran a contest where subscribers could win an Agnostica box. This time we’re running an Erisian Haiku Contest for Eris Day and the prize is Kaostar!, a written by Francis Breakspear.

Eris Day

Eris is the Greek goddess of chaos and discord. Today, she’s mostly remembered as the goddess who tossed the golden apple into a party she was not invited to which ultimately instigated the Trojan War. Discordians, by and large, take a decidedly lighter view of her than the ancient Greeks, and revel in her mischief. The Principia Discordia is her primary text. 1

Eris Day was declared to be May 23rd by Discordians as May is the fifth month and five is a number of chaos (the first break in the stable order of four), and twenty-three is famed by the likes of William S. Burroughs and Robert Anton Wilson as being particularly significant.

Haiku

English haikus are typically three lines following a syllabic pattern of 5-7-5, but we’re looking for Erisian haikus - feel free to take whatever liberties you deem necessary. They don’t even need to be about Eris - Erisian “flavour” is enough!

How to Win

Post your poems here, or e-mail them to psyche [at] plutonica [dot] net (remove nospam if clicking on the hyperlink). We’ll share them in the blog, so be sure to include the name you’d like used, and a link to your blog or website if you’d like it included. You can submit as many entries as you like.

If (when!) you win, I’ll send an e-mail requesting an address to send the prize to, so be sure to include a working e-mail address where you can be reached. (It won’t be stored, sold or otherwise compromised. I promise.)

The contest will end at midnight on May 23rd so get your entries in before then, and we’ll share submissions before announcing a winner.

What You Win

The prize will be a copy of Francis Breakspear’s Kaostar! reviewed earlier this year mailed to the winner.

Have Fun!

We’re not looking for the next Yosa Buson - don’t get too hung up on the particulars, relax, have fun with it!

And feel free to pass this on to anyone else you think will be interested!

This should be interesting. I’m running on about four hours of sleep.

      Her love is the squishiest.

      No room for bread.

….it’s just going to get worse, I think.

      MU is the answer.

Or is it the question, you ask?

      Either way, your dinner speaks.

Back for more, maybe, when I’m loopier still!

      Eris kissed my nose.
      The rapture was unending.
      Now I wear Straight-Jackets.

      No Cabbages Found.
      It’s already St Tibbs Day!
      Hail Discordia!

      The Hodge turns on Podge.
      Take that thermodynamics!
      St Gulik be Praised!

      Nuts to all stress says,

      Let’s go play some Sink!

      Eris demands praise

But what praise can be offered to the mistress of chaos aside from haikus bent out of shape?

      Apples, wars and popes

      A hounded beetle

In response to brandon in japan:

      What a fool I’ve been
But from there comes my fortune
      Always just in time

      And just for fun:

      Take it at the truth
Not all who wonder are lost
      Or not, as you will

      All statements are true
      They are also meaningless
      And false to be sure

      This is not an entry.

      From: http://community.livejournal.com/discord_society/68106.html

      the Discordian Haiku
The Discordian Haiku is a newly designed dying artform. It consists of three lines, much like a traditional haiku. The first and last line contain 5 syllables each (therefore complying with the law of fives), and the middle line contains a total of 23 sylables. It is traditional for the haiku to follow the pattern of “statement, violent outburst, statment” or a voice rallying against mediocrity which is quickly silenced.

An example by the present author (John Wilkes Harvey Oswald)

      A morning math class
Quick drop out of school before your mind rots from exposure to the educational system
      Carry the seven

If enough of these are written by an individual, something good is bound to happen. Perhaps.

Some of the best from that thread include:
      —–
      Working overtime
Stand up! Proclaim your monkey freedom by throwing fecal matter at your boss! Here he comes now!
      Kill the web browser.
      —–
      waking up early
the dangers and pressures and stresses of modern living quickly sickening and fuck that noise
      he is drunk by noon
      —–

Hopefully that will insprire some win and mittens.
