Genuine: I get asked this all the time.
Most of the reviews which appear on Plutonica.net are syndicated from my other website, SpiralNature.com, a 600+ page occult resource which plays host to more than 200 book, oracle and audio reviews. SpiralNature.com first went live on October 31st, 2000, and today receives an average of 4000-5000 hits daily. As an established site with a decent amount of traffic it’s an attractive venue for contributors to post articles and reviews.
As such, publishers will often send review copies of recent titles to SpiralNature.com’s post box (Spiral Nature – Book Reviews, 2100 Bloor Street West, P.O. Box 6-239, Toronto, Ontario, M6S 5A5), sometimes authors will send books in themselves, or an author I know will hand me hir latest book to review.
I receive a lot of books, and only a fraction of what comes in gets reviewed. There’s usually a backlog of between 50-60 books sitting on my review shelf at any given time. Most of these will eventually be reviewed; others are out of scope and will never be reviewed, though some may be read.
SpiralNature.com focuses exclusively on topics related to philosophy, spirituality and the occult and fiction and poetry rarely finds a place here. Self-published books are also unlikely to be reviewed as the quality tends to be poor, though some may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
I seldom review books I purchase myself, though I may comment on a few on this blog, Plutonica.net, when relevant.
However, there’s enough review material here for several years’ worth of reviewing, and – happily! – there’s no sign of this stopping any time soon. Indeed, I received more review copies in 2007 than in any year previous. Plus, I’m not sure how eager anyone is to hear my thoughts on The Third Policeman or the latest issue of Descant.
Reading is a pleasure for me, and while reviewing in this genre isn’t particularly lucrative, it is something I enjoy.
