When Anton LaVey’s died in 1997 his wife, Blanche Bardon, assumed his place as the head of the Church of Satan. In 2001 Bardon ceded her position as High Priestess, and promoted Peter Gilmore and Peggy Nadramia to High Priest and High Priestess respectively; positions they still retain today.
The Satanic Scriptures comprises of a collection of essays written between 1987-2006, many of which were previously published in The Black Flame, the magazine founded by Gilmore and Nadramia which served as the official magazine for the Church of Satan. Unfortunately, apart from the odd reference to current events, there’s no clear indication when individual essays were written, a shame as it would have helped provide context for some of the opinions voiced.
The essays focus heavily on Satanic thought, practice and guiding principles as directed by LaVey and the Church of Satan. A student of music, Gilmore presents the reader with an overview of his favourite “Satanic” composers and brief guide to their works.
One of my favourite essays in the book discusses the misguided enthusiasm of some newcomers to Satanism who don’t quite “get” it, yet desire to “prove” themselves great and powerful to the world. Gilmore writes: “Satanism’s championing of self-empowerment is used against Satanism itself when over-zealous amateurs decide they have a mission to represent Satanism.” Indeed, this tends to result in bizarre high school groups, or the proliferation of the absurd and hastily created websites which littered the Internet in the late 90s (a practice which continues today, I’m afraid to say). Needless to say, it doesn’t reflect well on the novice Satanist, or the Church of Satan.
As Gilmore comically notes “As far as I can tell, the rest of the world’s religions and philosophies don’t have this problem, and this is generally because they preach submission. When someone reads The Holy Bible, he doesn’t immediately go out, make a website-Vatican emblazoned with the Papal Seal, claim he is a Cardinal or Pope, and ordain correspondents as Priests, Bishops and Arch-Bishops”2. The man certainly has a point.
The last section deals with ritual, after a brief note on the subject, and a dedication rite, three larger rituals are detailed: a Satanic wedding, a Satanic funeral using Anton LaVey as the example, and a Norse-inspired ritual called the Rite of Ragnarok. Following is a brief biographical essay on Gilmore written by his wife, Peggy Nadramia.
The Satanic Scriptures provides a larger context for what it means to be a Satanist today, and makes an admirable follow up to Anton LaVey’s The Satanic Bible.

Hello everybody, my name is Damion, and I’m glad to join your conmunity,
and wish to assit as far as possible.
This is just a favorable comment in remembrance of Anton LaVey. I was raised a good Roman Catholic boy. But, when I went away to college in the beautiful, “Bible Belt,” town of Richmond, Kentucky, I found myself in the midst of legions of Fundamentalist Baptists where I was proselytized to and invited to a number of Bible studies. I first became aware of LaVey at one of these Bible studies. This was the late 1970’s and early 1980’s when, “Backward Masking,” on vinyl records was all the rage. The Eagles’ Hotel California album was held up as an example of Satanic influence in rock-n-roll. On the cover artwork, Anton LaVey’s silhouette was pointed out in the hotel’s upstairs window. Naturally, LaVey was identified, ridiculed, vilified and obviously feared by these good Christian folk. I left college and forgot about it. By the late 1990’s I had become seriously disillusioned with Christianity—the Jim Baker and Jimmy Swaggert scandals, the ridiculous number of Catholic priests charged with child molestation, how an institution so obviously wrong and hypocritical could be viewed by the masses as so good and righteous—and, mostly, how collectively subjective and incestuous Christian literature was and still is. I began studying more objective historical accounts of Christianity such as the Inquisition, the Crusades, Witch Trials and Burnings, murder, torture, rape, abortion, coercion, extortion, proliferating a Roman state religion by brute force, burning and destroying the library at Alexandria—depriving the world of knowledge— and, otherwise, criminal activity: in fact, the most bazaar atrocities ever committed against humankind. As such, I started searching even deeper for whatever it was I was searching for. In the early 2000’s, I remember standing in the metaphysical section of a large chain bookseller. I glanced down at a shelf and, laying there staring me right in the face was a bright orange covered book. It was Anton LaVey’s, The Satanic Witch. Recalling LaVey from my college days, I snatched up, “the forbidden fruit,” and began leafing through it. I bought it, found it delightful and, subsequently, wound up reading almost all of LaVey’s books as well as interviews with him in other books. I must say that I found him—and still find him—a most illuminating individual. And, what a marvelous sense of humor he had! I must admit that he caused me a great deal of psychological confusion, at first, until I grew to understand his brand of Satanism. But, he really caused me to think for myself, rather than to allow some religious entity or another to do my thinking for me. His writing, especially his essays, remain to this day a strong influence in my life. I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person while he was still alive. But, he is one of those characters who, if I could travel back in time, I would love to meet. As he represented himself in his literature, I would have been proud to call him, “my friend.”
A lot of people – most people, probably – come to LeVayan Satanism via Christianity. The revolt, then something just clicks.

Thank you for your reply, Psyche. No, I have not yet read Gilmore’s book. I’m presently 48 years old. I’ve studied the esoteric arts/sciences ever since elementary school, especially magic (even against the catechism). When I say, “studied,” I do not mean that I’ve had a superficial interest. I really mean, “studied,” and studied hard. As I’m sure you’re aware, this sort of stuff is definitely not light reading: at least, the most credible stuff is not. I think that after a long while of studying, one can reach a point of, “intellectual bondage.” That is to say that one can reach a point in which one cannot have a single thought without also having contradictory thoughts. It’s really quite frustrating never knowing right from wrong. In opposition to this, a survey of world culture demonstrates that the most primitive (un-intellectual) peoples are often the most talented and effectual magicians. As such, as difficult as it has been for me, I’ve ceased reading and studying the occult altogether, at least temporarily. Instead, I’m trying to work more on instinct and gut feeling as I imagine more primitive peoples would. I’m taking the, “If it feels good, do it,” approach to the occult these days and, as a matter of fact, I’m having a great deal more fun with it than I’ve ever had before. I’m sure I’ll read Gilmore’s book at some point in the future. He sounds like an interesting man. But, I think it’ll be awhile.

Psyche: I don’t know what your religious leanings are. I’ve read your self-proclamation as a, “Follower of the Left-Hand Path,” on this website. And, I’ve also read your favorable comments on Satanism. So, I think I can speculate with a fair degree of accuracy.
Anton LaVey, himself, acknowledged the existence of the Christian God. As I recall, in reference to the Christian Holy Bible’s Book of Genesis, which states, “God created man in His image,” LaVey wrote in reference to Christianity: “…the Goddamned dummies got it backward!” And, then, in reference to Christianity, to paraphrase, he wrote: “…through the power of their, “Group Mind,” (esoteric terminology), they actually brought their God into existence.”
So, Psyche: as Anton LaVey is one of the elements of this argument, using him as the reference, you cannot say that Angelina Lazar’s God is, “non-existent.”
Angelina Lazar:your charismatic entry here illustrates your religion precisely. So, I would just like know: what the Hell is a devout and righteous Goddamned Christian like you doing cruising Satanic websites like this one in the first place? Anton LaVey had much to say about hypocrites like you. According to his teaching, you’ve already, “Sold your soul to the Devil,” simply by clicking on this website. So, don’t go telling people whom you’ve never met which one’s souls are lost. It’s people like you who give Christianity a bad name. LaVey wrote an illuminating essay entitled, “The Third Side.” In it, he cites the Satanic Trident as a symbol. The two end tines symbolize two opposite, egoistic—hubristic—points of view on any issue. The middle tine symbolizes the, “the voice of reason”—”The Third Side”—of the argument: the one to which either both extremes are oblivious, or else to which neither ego wants to admit. To illustrate, he uses the, “Pro-life -vs- Pro-choice,” argument. LaVey identifies, “the third side,” by stating, “Stop being stupid, irresponsible, and disrespectful of human life.” Paradoxically obvious, I think.
So, between the two of you, Psyche and Angelina Lazar, there must be, “The Third Side,” although I don’t know what it is.
Angelina Lazar: I hate to be the one to inform you. However, the 2000-year plus history of Christianity is a cumulative account of, absolutely, THE most bazaar atrocities ever committed against humankind. Those grand scale atrocities continue being committed in Christianity even to this day. I find it rather an hypocrisy that you describe yourself as an, “ORTHODOX defender of human rights.” Yet, you subscribe to, BY FAR, the most persecutory entity, as well as THE HUGEST offender against human rights, in the history of humankind. Rather than going around calumniating people whom you don’t know over a subject to which you have no knowledge, whatsoever, intelligence would dictate that you should be questioning your own beliefs.
You should easily be able to find a bibliography of Anton LaVey’s works. Since you’ve already sold your soul to the Devil, are destined to burn in Hell for the rest of eternity, and have nothing to lose, anyway, you might as well read LaVey’s works. At least, you’ll get a perspective, which is a whole Hell of a lot more than you have now. Until then, I think you should keep your mouth shut.

My review of this book does not represent my adherence to the Church of Satan or LaVeyan Satanism in general. The book was kindly sent for review by Feral Press, and while I do have an abiding interest in Satanism, this interest does not extent to self-identification with that system.
Thus, I am not a LaVeyan Satanist, I am an avowed atheist (see here for more on that).
I can say her god, and all gods in any literal anthropomorphic sense are non-existent, because it is what the facts suggest. The non-existence of something cannot be proved (you could try demonstrating it with Invisible Pink Unicorns, or Flying Spaghetti Monsters, but you won’t really get anywhere). But given the (lack of) evidence, it is the only reasonable conclusion I can make.

Hello Psyche. Very nice meeting and getting to know you a little better. Please accept my apology for my false presumption. The adage, “You know what happens when you ‘Ass-u-me?’” seems apropos.
Before the 20th century, the terms, “science,” and, “reason,” were often used interchangeably. In his book, The History of Magic (2001 Red Wheel/Weiser), 19th-century magician, Eliphas Levi stated, “Faith begins where reason (“science,” in his context) ends.”
“Evidence,” “Facts,” “Truth,” “Existence,” “Non-existence,” etc. tend to be established by science alone. I have a love-hate relationship with science and, “The Scientific Method of Thinking.” I do not argue its validity and effectiveness. Science has been able to do all sorts of miraculous things for humankind. But, “science,” in its literal sense of the word, (a body of knowledge), is always temporary and arbitrary. One of the steps of the Scientific Method is changing—modifying—disproving—hypotheses. Because of its innate mutability, science is always right and it seems hardly anyone can ever remember when it was wrong.
It is for these reasons that I don’t trust science in terms of long-term spiritual beliefs. Just because science cannot prove the existence of any literal, anthropomorphic, God today—or, for that matter, “Flying Spaghetti Monsters”—doesn’t mean that it will not be able to tomorrow. Therefore, I can neither adopt, nor reject the existence of any God. To me, it truly is a matter of faith.
I bash Christianity a lot on this website. However, ironically, my spiritual beliefs are essentially Christian. Can you believe it? It’s just that, the older I get, the more acutely aware I become of my own shortcomings as a human being—”sins,” if you will—and the more difficult I find it to change, although I’m still trying to become a, “better human being,” as I define it. As such, I find a personal need for, “forgiveness,” and, “forgetfulness.” I cannot always find those attributes in other human beings: those willing to, “forgive my trespasses against them,” and forget them. In some instances, no matter how sorry I’ve been and no matter how willing I’ve been to atone, I cannot erase certain things from the memories of others. I cannot change the past and I cannot control others’ thinking. So, as my consciousness expands and my ego diminishes, I find a great deal of comfort in a, “Savior.” The Christ works for me as a deity, whether it exists physically, or not.
My issues are not with the concept of the Christ, itself, but rather with Christianity as a religion. After having taken the time and effort to come to understand LaVeyan Satanism, I’ve always felt that, if Christianity could adhere to the high Earthly moral and ethic standards of LaVeyan Satanism, it might have something going for it. However, in its present state, I see Christianity as an abomination against the very God it professes. As the Christ purportedly said, “The tree is known by its fruit.” Therefore, as a religion, Christianity cannot be taken seriously. It’s a farce. In my opinion, anyone wishing to, “Accept the Christ,” should do so as a, “Solitary Practitioner,” in order to avoid being associated with the hypocrisy, embarrassment, humiliation, and degradation of Christianity. For whatever it’s worth…
I will take the liberty of responding to this former post.
I must say: this is a soul, searching for God and to improve himself. But is lost due to no Guidance and not knowing the Truth. All the same, though, I think that is not his fault, as it is true that many priests, pastors, bishops, cardinals, patriarchs and even the pope are indeed, high level masons and satanists, so he is NOT WRONG to say that there are found ABOMINATIONS in so-called “Christanity”.
That’s JUST IT, THOUGH. THAT is NOT Christianity. Christianity is, TRULY, TRULY, ONLY when one’s SPIRITUAL EYES are OPEN, that is, they have become REBORN IN CHRIST. Otherwise, it is true: they can go to church ALL THEIR LIVES, and be VERY ACTIVE IN THE CHURCH, but for them, that is more a CLUB, than a VEHICLE for SALVATION as they STILL DO NOT KNOW GOD.
I know. I have seen this many times all throughout the world. In communist countries, the ruling powers placed as bishops ONLY those they had a “COMPROMAT” on. So that they would always have it over them, and would reveal their sins (usually of a sexual nature, as that is more scandalous) publicly if they were to FIGHT against COMMUNISM or the EXPOSE THE GOVERNMENT for WRONGDOING. In this way, the Church NEVER REALLY HAD THE POWER IT SHOULD in SERVING CHRIST AS IT WAS MEANT TO. So the whole CHURCH was COMPROMISED. I have seen this in the former Yugoslavia as I have seen it in Russia over many years.
The SAME is TRUE for the CATHOLIC CHURCH. It is TRULY, THE GREATEST ABOMINATION and IS the GREAT HARLOT spoken of in Revelations. But Catholics do NOT realize that their OWN POPE, many Bishops and Cardinals (actually, I believe all, or they would NEVER attain that rank in the Vatican, but it may be a very few SLIPPED through the cracks ) are HIGH LEVEL MASONS AND/OR SATANISTS. In fact, they are guilty of the INQUISITION and GREATEST CRIMES to HUMANITY. And in fact, in the basement of the VATICAN, ITSELF, SATANIC RITUALS are EFFECTED. And ALL THE SYMBOLISM of the Vatican, itself is SATANIC.
So I CANNOT blame this former poster, Jeff, for feeling this way, as he does NOT KNOW what TRUE CHRISTIANITY is – as YES, it comes down to one KNOWING Christ, PERSONALLY, and LIVING ACCORDING TO HIS HOLY PRINCIPLES. If ALL “CHRISTIANS” were to do JUST that, then, all “Jeffs” would KNOW what Christianity TRULY IS, and would NEVER fall into the clutches of Satan.
So, perhaps, indeed, false Christians are to partly blame for that. I, FOR ONE, will ALWAYS SPEAK THE TRUTH and FIGHT FOR IT AS CHRIST REQUIRES OF US, so that ALL SUCH “Jeffs” will, TRULY, KNOW, that Christ is REAL and the SAME YESTERDAY AS TODAY AS ALWAYS, and that Heaven and Hell are REAL and TRULY DO EXIST, and that ONLY THROUGH CHRIST can we be saved as ONLY TRUE CHRISTIANS exhibit that GODLINESS which is Christ’s.
And since, our Mission is ALWAYS to BEGIN at home, that is WHAT I AM DOING: working on OUSTING OUR OWN SATANIC MASONIC BISHOP in Canada, who CAME FROM A COMMUNIST COUNTRY as a SECRET SERVICE AGENT of RANK, who KNOWS NOT GOD, but is SEXUALLY PERVERTED and an OUTRIGHT CRIMINAL! And I KNOW that our CHURCH IS INFESTED with WEAK, LAME, FALSE CHRISTIANS who do NOT HAVE THE GUMPTION, HOLY BRAVADO, FAITH and CONVICTION to FIGHT HIM, even though they SENSE he is EVIL. So voila… I speak from EXPERIENCE to a VAST DEGREE. And know and understand Jeff’s dilemna and conundrum.
And all I can say, is that I am TRULY SORRY that such IS the case. I cannot say it is NOT. But Jeff: CHRIST IS. DO NOT LOOK AT THE BAD EXAMPLES and ALLOW SATAN TO STEAL YOUR SOUL. And I assure you the ANSWER is NOT with lavey, that God-forsaken satanist who is, without a doubt, in the everlasting fire and pit of hell. The answer is with Christ. Read the Scriptures, EVEN IF YOU DO NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND, and it will ENLIGHTEN YOU further, for you are ON YOUR WAY, and may your CONSCIENCE CONTINUE TO BE YOUR GUIDE, for you are TRULY, CONSCIONABLE and HIGHLY CONSCIENCIOUS, just ON THE WRONG PATH. But LOOK! God brought me here to set you on the RIGHT PATH as a result of your DILIGENT SEARCH FOR THE TRUTH.
