A Scottish group specializing in the paranormal, Full Moon Investigations, is working to obtain posthumous pardons for 4,000 people prosecuted, tortured and executed for witchcraft.

It began with a petition to pardon Helen Duncan, born at Callander, Perthshire. Arrested in 1994, Duncan was sentenced to nine months in prison under the Witchcraft Act of 1735, making her the last person to be arrested under the act.

Duncan was arrested after conducting seances in locations across Britain, but was allegedly arrested after concerns were raised that she would reveal details of the upcoming D-Day landings.

Last year relatives had their bid for her name to be cleared turned down.

The group is seeking to submit a petition to ministers that calls for them to lobby the Home Office for a full pardon.

Andrea Byrne, founder of Full Moon Investigations, said:

“The pardon of the 4,000 people prosecuted as witches is very relevant in today’s society. Occupations such as herbalists, acupuncture, midwifery, reiki, and health foods can all be seen as having many of their roots in the wise traditions and words of people who would have been classed as witches in their day.

“We owe so much to these people and also to Helen Duncan whose case led to the Witchcraft Act being repealed, and this allows mediums and these other occupations to practice freely today.”
