Pardon me for thinking that, unlike ivy, I die when I become attached.

Tarot parties

As I’ve mentioned before1, I run a tarot consultation business on the side. Recently I read at a surprise party for a client’s wife, and it was a lot of fun. Typically I read for individual clients, and do the occasional fundraiser. It’s been a long time since I last read for a private event – I almost forgot how much I enjoy it.

At this party I had a secluded room off to the side with a windowed door where people could easily see whether or not I was already with someone; though once I was set up, the seat opposite me was rarely empty for more than a few seconds.

Reading tarot at parties is a neat thing. It provides a venue for people who wouldn’t normally think of going to a tarot reader to try it out in a “safe” and fun environment. It also gives me a chance to interact with people I wouldn’t generally meet, and go to places I wouldn’t usually visit.

I arrive in a suit, toting a briefcase full of tarot goodness. I lay a cream cloth over the table and a light scarf for contrast (red, in this instance). I light incense and candles which illuminate a decorative crystal ball2. A box of tissues is placed off to the side, because, yes, sometimes people do cry – getting a reading can be an incredibly emotional experience, often unexpectedly so. My business cards are placed more toward the front, but off to the side as well. Professional, but with the stage set to induce the correct mood.

Some people enter the room with trepidation, most are just a little unsure, very few have had readings before. A smile and a bit of light chat as I shuffle the cards helps to relax the atmosphere.

A few people have questions, how long have I been doing this, how does it work, where did you learn, and so on. I answer them as best I can, but I have to be careful, as anything I say instantly becomes “true” of all tarot readers, so I’m careful to note that other readers will have different opinions and experience, but yes, it really does “work”.

The tone of a reading given at a party is decidedly lighter than during an hour-long session with a single person. The party-goers are there to have a good time, and there’s only so much one can get into in 10-15 minutes, but it does provide a taste for what it can be.

One of my favourite things about reading for parties is the ability to, um, well, eavesdrop on what people say to their friends when they leave my table. I don’t usually get such instant feedback, if I get feedback at all. I get to hear how they interpret their readings, what it means to them, how they deflect some things, and take others to heart 3.

As I said, it’s been a while, I forgot how much fun it was. I think it’s time to revisit how I position this service on my website; I’d like to do more.

Footnotes:
  1. See Tarot and accuracy. [back]
  2. I don’t scry publicly. [back]
  3. One gentleman, upon exiting the room, came out shouting “I’m all about the wands!” with his fists in the air. It was simply adorable. [back]
