Christians in Reeves have been unhappy since the early 1960s about being given the prefix, 666 - traditionally known as the Biblical “number of the beast”.BBC News, “US town escapes 666 phone prefix“
While acknowledging lobbying on the part of Louisiana’s two senators with change with the phone company and the state Public Service Commission, Mayor Scott Walker is cited as saying CenturyTel’s decision was “divine intervention”.
If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man’s number. His number is 666.
Revelations 13:18
Many believe this passage refers to Nero or Domitian, as the BBC notes, “[u]sing the Jewish system of Gematria, in which each letter is given a number, either name can be made to add up to 666.”
There are about 450 homeowners in Reeves, and it seems the change is optional, and during the next three months hexakosioihexekontahexaphobic residents will be able to change their area code to “749″.
Fortunately for the citizens of Reeves, 749 has historically observed a less prejudiced response to its gematric significance.
